PERFORMANCE SUMMARY
The FWD line from Altra has been producing some of my personal favorite shoes. My trainer of the year last year was the FWD Experience Flow 2, which I loved for its connection to the ground, softer (than a typical Altra) midsole, and forefoot flexibility. However, this year the flexible forefoot was not matching my personal needs given some aggravation of a tear of the ligaments on the bottom of my big toe. Therefore, I thought the FWD Via could be a good replacement. Let's talk more about the shoe from top to bottom.
The fit of this shoe is fantastic. It has a very voluminous toe box (both wide and tall), allowing for toe splay and movement of the toes. At the same time, the midfoot and heel lock down really well and easily. There is no need to mess around with lacing, the combination of loops and eyelets makes for an easily securable upper. The material of the upper is a mesh that is soft and emphasizes comfort, with a good amount of heel and tongue padding. Therefore it is a premium-style upper that has suited me well warmth-wise this winter. I cannot speak to how it will perform in the heat, but there are enough perforations that I could see decent breathability while feeling warm on the hottest days. The heel is secure and padded, and the heel counter only spans half-way up the back, possibly making it work for those with heel irritation. However, it is rigid in the places where it exists, so if you're one of those people I'd recommend trying before buying.
Because they have a 4mm drop, Altra is able to put in their EGOP35 midsole foam, which is significantly more compliant and softer than their EGO and EGOMax midsoles. The softness of this foam (at the higher 37-33mm stack) feels plush and pillow-like without being mushy. There is also a mild rocker that allows you to roll forward smoothly and efficiently. I have never felt the foam feel so soft that I was slogging along, but rather it has just a touch of liveliness that makes it really enjoyable for easy miles and daily miles. The heel bevel is solid as well, but is not so big that it impedes standing or walking. In fact, this is my current favorite shoe to spend all day on my feet in, making it quite versatile as a walking, standing, easy running shoe. Case and point, I traveled for 5 days to a conference and only had space for one pair of shoes, and this was the one I picked. Despite that versatility for the walk --> jog spectrum, it isn't as versatile for above easy paces.
There is a good amount of rubber on the outsole that has a generally wide ground contact and a bit of sidewalls built up. These features lend this shoe to being stable neutral, though the foam may be a bit soft for some who want a more rigid platform for their stability or structure. In addition to those features, the overall smoothness of the geometry (heel bevel and mild rocker) helps this shoe be a guided and stable neutral shoe.

FINAL THOUGHTS
Reviewer
Fit: A (Roomy toe box, premium upper matches purpose, no heel slippage)
Performance: B+/A- (Versatile for walking and jogging, not as good for faster work)
Stability: B+/A- (Stable neutral, but softer foam may not be what some folks want for their stability)
Value: A (This shoe seems like it will last, and I've gotten high mileage out of previous shoes with this foam. Performance matches price)
Personal: A (Great for daily use and easy miles. Matches my personal needs for my foot)
Overall Design: A-
The Altra FWD Via 2 is a highly-cushioned shoe that would be best used by someone who is prioritizing comfort and wants some versatility between walking and running. That said, I do think this is a full-blown running shoe, but is best suited for casual or easy miles instead of a shoe that could easily go faster. I'm thankful that Altra is playing around with their foam compounds now that they have some drop to play with, and even more happy that the fit is representing what Altra should be: a wide and high volume toe box that can be one of the best in the business.
