Altra Experience Wild 3+: Quick Evalution
By David Salas

The Altra Experience lineup is a series of daily training shoes that deviate from their traditional 0mm drop platform. These shoes use a 4mm drop platform and a rocker profile that is a bit more consistent with platforms that many people are used to. The Experience Wild 3+ is the all-terrain option for this lineup and is meant to tackle both road and trail footing.

PERFORMANCE SUMMARY

The Altra Experience Wild 3+ is a fun offering to the Altra lineup. The Experience Wild 3+ focuses on versatility. The goal is to have a shoe that runs smooth on both roads and trails. For the most part, they accomplished it here. The Experience Wild 3+ leans more trails than road, but still runs on the roads well enough.

The upper is very trail ready. The mesh material is abrasion resistant and includes gaiter attachments. The Experience Wild 3+ also includes a toe guard. The toe guard is effective, but very noticeable. I feel my foot pushing up against it when I am descending steep downhills. Otherwise, it was fine during other situations. The Altra Experience Wild 3+ has a decently accommodating fit. The volume is a bit lower, but the forefoot has plenty of width and I did not have any pinching of the material. The tongue is padded well and I had no issues with biting. The security of the upper was good as well. I had no issues with foot translation or heel slippage when running on either roads or trails. The toe guard could be reworked, but otherwise it is a good upper.

The Altra Experience Wild 3+ uses the same EGO P35 midsole that is seen in the Experience Flow lineup. The EGO P35 midsole is a touch softer than previous training foams from Altra. This softens the shoe for road efforts. However, the Experience Wild 3+ also uses a Vibram Megagrip outsole that firms up the platform some. The result is a firmer leading ride, but one that is still protective for longer efforts. The rocker is balanced well and does not feel very aggressive. The forefoot does have moderate flexibility. This feels nice when climbing steeper hills or when you need to dig into the forefoot. The Experience Wild 3+ is a nicely balanced shoe, but nothing overly exciting in any category. Despite this, it is a shoe that you can walk, hike, and run in. That alone gives it a good argument to meets its value.

FINAL THOUGHTS

David
Fit: B+ (Well balanced. Toe guard slightly too present. The volume could be increased a touch.)
Performance:
B (Leans trail. Not exceptional in any category, but does a good enough job at walk, run, hike.)
Stability: B+ (Decently stable throughout. Neutral with some slight sole flaring.)
Value: B+ ($165 feels a touch high, but value comes with multiple different uses)
Personal: B (The toe guard is too noticeable for me, but the shoe is decent all around.)
Overall Design: B+

This is a nice, versatile trail piece for Altra. It doesn't do anything standout, but it ticks all the boxes you need to tackle a trail, whether you want to run or hike. If you want a versatile piece for recreational trail running, this could fit the bill if you like the styling.

***Disclaimer: These shoes were provided free of charge in exchange for a review.  We thank the people at Altra for sending us a pair.  This in no way affected the honesty of this review. We systematically put each type of shoe through certain runs prior to review. For trainers and performance trainers, we take them on daily runs, workouts, recovery runs and a long run prior to review (often accumulating anywhere from 20-50 miles in the process). For racing flats we ensure that we have completed intervals, a tempo or steady state run as well as a warm-up and cool down in each pair prior to review. This systematic process is to ensure that we have experience with each shoe in a large variety of conditions to provide expansive and thorough reviews for the public and for companies. Our views are based on our extensive history in the footwear industry and years testing and developing footwear. If you are a footwear rep looking for footwear reviews or consultations on development, we are currently looking to partner with companies to assist, discuss and promote footwear models. Partnership will not affect the honesty of our reviews.
