PERFORMANCE SUMMARY
The Altra Experience Flow ST is an anatomic fitting, low drop stability shoe. The fit is wide throughout the length of the shoe with a particular wide and anatomic toe box. Those with wide feet or who want more room will enjoy this shoe most, while those with narrow feet will struggle. The engineered sandwich mesh upper has both additional volume and stretch, providing even more room. This wider fit and flexibility do make lockdown somewhat difficult as the laces need to be tied down tightly for a secure fit. The tongue is thicker, so this can be done, but it is non-gusseted and can slide to the side. The more flexible upper has its benefits as the heel counter is flexible and excellent for those with heel sensitivity. I have had no issues with this shoe while running or wearing for 10-12 hour days standing/walking, so those with Haglund deformities will do well in this shoe.
The Altra Experience Flow ST is the lightest stability shoe available in the US/UK. The 8.1 oz weight (men's size 9) and the softer EGOP35 make for a light feeling shoe on foot. The midsole foam is not mushy with mild bounce. While not a racing shoe, there is plenty of pop for daily training. With how light the weight is, picking up the pace is easy but it is slightly too soft and too flexible for me to feel comfortable using it for faster efforts. During strides and uptempo efforts it feels great but then begins to lag a bit attempting tempo or faster efforts. Thankfully, it does well at easier training efforts. There is a rounded heel that combined with the softer foam compresses well at heel strike. The softer foam compresses enough that this feels more like a zero-drop than a 4mm drop shoe when landing at the heel. Those who land at the midfoot and forefoot will be able to appreciate the drop more than heel strikers. The midfoot and forefoot transitions are surprisingly smooth thanks to a moderate-to-high level of flexibility for this stack height. While not a low-stack height shoe, it is not a maximal shoe and the softer foam and flex grooves create a more flexible ride that will do best for those who have good toe mobility.
The stability in the Altra Experience Flow ST is mild, but present. Most of this comes through guidance, with a wider platform and significant sidewalls mostly in the heel and posterior midfoot. While potentially more moderately stable in a firmer shoe, the softer ride mitigates some of the more moderate stability possibilities of this shoe. The heel is decently stabilized between the two sidewalls and the slightly higher arch and firmer medial length of outsole material adds mild support along the medial side of the shoe. For those with high stability needs, this will not be enough and will feel neutral. For those with mild stability or medial guidance needs, there will be just enough to be comfortable in the heel and somewhat in the midfoot.

FINAL THOUGHTS
Matt
Fit: A- (Wide, anatomic fit with a soft comfortable upper. Tongue slides and a little loose but comfortable with a rare flexible heel counter)
Performance: B+ (Lightest stability shoe available with a softer ride and more flexible transitions. Best for easy and some uptempo efforts. Comfortable for both walking and running)
Stability: B+ [Mild Stability] (Wider platform creates full length mild guidance while most stability is present in the heel and posterior midfoot with sidewalls, a wider platform and more medial outsole than lateral. Offset by softer midsole)
Value: B+ (Early wear makes durability a little concerning but a good value as the lightest and softest shoe in this category)
Personal: A- (A more versatile option than the prior version for both running and walking)
Overall Design: B+/A-
I have 40 miles in my pair and while I am seeing some early outsole wear, that may also be from the fact that I have been wearing these as my daily walking and standing shoes day in/out for the last month since I got them. The comfort level is high in these and while there is improving running versatility, may still be a top notch option for a wide toe box walking shoe. The lightweight and softer midsole makes this an easy shoe to forget on your feet. My only issue is that with the softer midsole (which I like), the dynamic drop becomes lower in this shoe. As someone with improving insertional Achilles tendinopathy, the low drop has been difficult but part of my careful integration of lower drop shoes into my rotation. Despite the slowly increasing number of anatomic stability shoes, the Altra Experience Flow ST maintains its unique position by dropping its weight an incredible amount while almost everything else stays the same weight or gets heavier. For those who this shoe matches, it is an excellent option and is a massive improvement over the original Experience Form.
