Altra Experience Flow 3: Quick Evaluation
By Andrea Myers

The Altra Experience Flow 3 is one of a few Altra road shoes that are not zero drop, including the Experience Flow ST and FWD Via 2, with all three having a 4mm drop. The Experience Flow 3 and its more stable counterpart, the Flow ST, have stack heights of 32/28 mm, compared to the higher stack FWD Via 2, which is 37/33 mm. The Experience Flow 3 features Altra's classic wide and high volume toe box, a softer midsole thanks to Altra's new EGO P35 foam, and a neutral ride.

Altra Experience Flow 3
Price: $145 at Running Warehouse
Weight: 9.0oz, 255g (men's size 9), 7.5oz, 212g (women's size 8)
Stack Height: 32 mm heel / 28 mm forefoot

Shoe Purpose: Daily trainer

Pros: Wide and high volume toe box (classic Altra), Altra EGO P35 foam softer than Altra EGO foam in other trainers, great for standing/walking as well as running
Cons: Forefoot may feel too flexible for some, not responsive at faster paces

SIMILAR SHOES: Feels like a softer, heavier Saucony Kinvara with a wider toe box
PAST MODEL: Altra Experience Flow 2

PERFORMANCE SUMMARY

I was looking forward to testing the Experience Flow 3 because I needed a break from all of the maximal stack shoes I have tested so far in 2026. The first thing I noticed when I put the shoe on is that the fit is classic Altra, with a truly wide and high volume toe box. I have been disappointed by the fit of several of Altra's shoes in the past couple of years, because it seems they had strayed from consistently having a wide, comfortable toe box to one that is narrower and low volume. The upper is a thicker mesh material that kept my feet warm during my winter test runs, but I suspect it will feel warm in the summer months. It fits true to length in my usual women's 9.5, allowing me to wear thicker socks and still have plenty of room for my toes. It was easy to lock the shoe down without fussing too much with the laces. This is hands down the best fitting Altra I have tested since the Altra Escalante 3 in 2022.

The Experience Flow 3 features Altra's new Altra EGO P35 midsole, which is a compression molded olefin block copolymer blend. This is the same midsole material of the Experience Flow 2, but I did not test that model. The new midsole makes the Experience Flow 3 the softest Altra shoe I have tested. For those who are not familiar with Altra, most of their shoes are quite firm, so this means that the Experience Flow 3 has moderate compliance. This is nowhere near the softest shoe I have tested, but it is definitely the softest Altra. The lower stack height and more compliant midsole provide moderate ground feel, and the relatively late forefoot rocker and flexible forefoot makes the ride quite neutral. This is a shoe that gets out of the way and lets you run, without any design features that force motion in any particular direction. I found the shoe ideal for easy runs but not faster paces due to the softer, less responsive midsole. The shoe feels like its stated 4mm drop and is perfectly comfortable for midfoot landings. I have 25 miles on my pair and there is minimal visible wear on the high coverage rubber outsole, which also provides decent traction on wet roads. The shoe is also quite comfortable for standing and walking and I have been enjoying wearing it to work.

The Experience Flow 3 is a neutral shoe without any noticeable guidance methods. The upper has enough volume that it would work well with an orthotic if needed. Those looking for a shoe with medial support should look at the Experience Flow ST.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Andrea
Fit: A (Finally Altra has gotten back to their classic toe box fit. The only thing that would make the fit better is if the upper were thinner, because I suspect it will be hot in the summer).
Performance: A-
(Great for easy miles. A- because I like my daily trainer to be able to handle strides, but the midsole is too soft and not responsive enough for fast running)
Stability: [neutral] B+ (A neutral shoe with a mild forefoot rocker that is muted by forefoot flexibility. Will work well with orthotics)
Value: A ($145 for a comfortable daily trainer is pretty standard these days. This shoe will eat up many easy miles.)
Personal: A- (Love the fit and the ride for easy miles, minus half a grade for not being able to pick up the pace.)
Overall Design: A-

The Altra Experience Flow 3 is a neutral, moderate stack daily trainer with a 4mm drop and a softer midsole. It will be best for runners who like the classic, wide Altra toe box, but do not get along with Altra's zero drop options. This is a rare 2026 shoe that has a forefoot stack below 30mm, mild rocker geometry, 4mm drop, and a flexible forefoot. It is also a great option for those who work on their feet. I definitely plan to put more running miles and wear it for work in the future.

***Disclaimer: These shoes were provided free of charge in exchange for a review.  We thank the people at *** for sending us a pair.  This in no way affected the honesty of this review. We systematically put each type of shoe through certain runs prior to review. For trainers and performance trainers, we take them on daily runs, workouts, recovery runs and a long run prior to review (often accumulating anywhere from 20-50 miles in the process). For racing flats we ensure that we have completed intervals, a tempo or steady state run as well as a warm-up and cool down in each pair prior to review. This systematic process is to ensure that we have experience with each shoe in a large variety of conditions to provide expansive and thorough reviews for the public and for companies. Our views are based on our extensive history in the footwear industry and years testing and developing footwear. If you are a footwear rep looking for footwear reviews or consultations on development, we are currently looking to partner with companies to assist, discuss and promote footwear models. Partnership will not affect the honesty of our reviews.
