June 2021 Round-Up | Introducing our Guest Review Team!

Editor Matt Klein and the true owner of Doctors of Running, Pico

It's been a wild half year at Doctors of Running. We've almost already hit 70 reviews for the year and are well on our way to an all-time high by year's end. With so much going on, we've decided to make some changes to not only help continue our growth, but give our small team some breathing room and help provide the chance to explore some new avenues. The first step was to create our guest review team! Read on to learn more about the big change and of course, get caught up with all the latest at Doctors of Running.

INTRODUCING THE GUEST REVIEW TEAM

We're excited to finally introduce our guest review team! We have talked for a long time about bringing in new faces, but we're weren't quite sure how til recently. Moving forward, our plan is to bring in members of the Physical Therapy community to join the team to write reviews and share their skillset. We're excited to not only share our knowledge, but learn from others and help broaden what we do at Doctors of Running. With that in mind, we're excited to introduce Andrea Myers, Megan Flynn, and Ryan Flugaur to the team moving forward as Guest Reviewers. Read on to learn a little bit more about our new teammates!

Andea Myers is a Doctor of Physical Therapy and Board Certified Orthopedic Specialist who sees patients in Bethel, CT at Carlson ProCare. She also provides bike fitting services at Class Cycles in Southbury, CT. Andrea completed her undergraduate degree in molecular and cellular biology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She graduated from St. Ambrose University in 2006 with a Doctorate in Physical Therapy.

Andrea has a strong background in treating patients with a variety of orthopedic diagnoses, including sports injuries, back and neck pain, and patients who have undergone orthopedic surgery. She has extensive training in manual therapy, including myofascial release, Integrative Manual Therapy, craniosacral therapy, and Kinesiotaping. She is also certified in vestibular rehabilitation for the treatment of vertigo and balance disorders. She is well known for her knowledge and experience in treating runners, cyclists, and multi-sport athletes of all levels.

Andrea started running with her parents at the age of 4 and competed in both track and cross country from a young age through high school.. She ran a disastrous Chicago Marathon in 2003, learning important lessons about fueling in the process. Not long after Chicago, Andrea was forced to stop running due to persistent patellofemoral pain. She turned to spin class for a physical outlet, where she met a cycling coach who encouraged her to take up road cycling. Her running fitness helped her take to the bike quickly, and she went from a novice to a professional racer in the span of 2 years. She has multiple top-ten placings in international level (UCI) competitions, and has numerous championship titles at the state and regional level. The time off from running in addition to comprehensive physical therapy treatment allowed her to gradually re-introduce running in the off season. She has shifted focus from cycling back to running over the past few years, and is now primarily focusing on running to see what is possible.

Megan Flynn is a Doctor of Physical Therapy at Custom Performance PT, located in New York City. While she treats various orthopedic injuries, she primarily specializes in treating injured runners. At Custom Performance, Megan has the unique opportunity to continue working with and coaching runners after they successfully return to pain-free running.

Megan graduated from The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) in 2014 with a bachelor's of science degree and went on to the University of Delaware (UD) for her doctorate of physical therapy degree. While at UD, Megan also earned her Masters of Science in Clinical Anatomy & Biomechanics.

Megan began running competitively as a freshman in high school (2006) and it has been a major component of her life since then. She was a member of the cross country and indoor/outdoor track & field teams for TCNJ and one season for UD while a first-year PT student. In college, she focused on the 3k/5k for TCNJ and the 10k at UD. Megan continues to train at a competitive level putting in ~70 miles/week and is a member of Leonia Track Club based in Leonia, NJ. She recently completed a track season in spring 2021 and will be transitioning to marathon training for the fall with California International Marathon being the goal race. Outside of running, Megan enjoys hiking, traveling, going to the beach, reading, and playing with her two adorable cats!

BIG ANNOUNCEMENT!

This past weekend on June 27, 2021, chief editor Matt Klein and Regina Lopez tied the knot! YAY Y'ALL!

From Editor Matt Klein:

I was blessed to marry the love of my life, my best friend, my running partner, my rock. Regina Lopez.. I was so incredibly nervous before the wedding. I don’t know why. Perhaps for once, the performer and entertainer in me got performance anxiety. I wanted this to be perfect for both of us. When I finally saw you, all the nervousness melted away. We spoke from the heart, kissed deeply and danced the night away. We were blessed to be surrounded by friends and family both in person and virtually. The outpouring of love and support is something that is still carrying our hearts. The speeches were beautiful, our dance majestic and fun. My father remarked that he had seen me so happy only twice in his life. Once, when I was young, I sat in bed reading with food and our cat Frisky sitting in my lap. I remarked at that time that I had everything I needed. The other time was when he saw me holding your hands, speaking our vows, dancing, kissing and truly connecting as wife and husband. I can say again, that I am happiest with you and you are all I need.

Nike Vaporfly Next% 2
Release: Available now [Shop Running Warehouse]

The legendary racing shoe that's completely reshaped the running industry over the past few years comes back with an upper update, helping provide a more comfortable fit and lockdown. Contributor David Salas adds to his ever-growing collection of super shoes. Lookout for a review from him soon.

Puma Magnify Nitro
Release: Available now at Puma.com

This new maximal cushioned trainer from Puma features their highest stacked Nitro foam offering yet on top of a layer of PROFOAM LITE. Per Puma, with sockliner you get 29 mm in the forefoot and 38 mm in the heel. It weighs in at 244 g (roughly 8.6 oz) for women, 299 g (10.5 oz) for men.

There’s also their signature Puma Grip outsole that’s been well-loved in their Nitro line. The shoe is gender-specific with a slightly more narrow heel, lower in-step, and sculpted arch in the women’s version.

Hoka One One Zinal
Release: Available now [Shop Running Warehouse]

Zinal is a brand new trail runner which dials down the maximal cushioning seen in most of their shoes to create a light, super nimble shoe for technical trail running and racing. Featuring their Profly midsole, it comes with 21 mm in the heel and 17 mm in the forefoot - 10 mm less than its maximal sibling in the Hoka trail line, the Torrent 2. This big shave in stack combined with Vibram Litease outsole makes the Zinal a very fun, very controlled trail runner that can take on a variety of terrain with confidence as you’re closer and more planted into the Earth. Hoka calls this their grippy, “gecko”-like trail runner, with the colors inspiring some of that Gecko vibe.

Adidas Adizero Pro 2
Release: Available now [Shop Running Warehouse]

We may have debated the term bouncy for an hour, but there’s no doubt the @adidasrunning Adizero Adios Pro 2 is by far the bounciest shoe we’ve been in this year. There’s some instability in the midfoot, but the forefoot is solid. There is a bit of a lateral bias in the heel, but the sole is soft. The Celermesh upper is fantastic: breathable, very see-through, provides solid lockdown, and is now made of partially recycled materials which is a nice plus.

Each Friday on our Instagram and Facebook we are excited to be sharing different discussions on shoe science between our team members and down the line with members of the running community.
