Asics FujiTrabuco Lyte Review

Finding lightweight trail shoes can be difficult. The market currently looks more toward maximally cushioned shoes.  Additionally, trail shoes in general are heavier due to different upper and sole design compared to road shoes. So for those looking for lightweight trainers or racing flats on trails are limited to only a couple options. The Asics FujiTrabuco Lyte is one of them. Asics usually isn't a company I associate with trail running, but the company is making some interesting product moves recently. As someone with a preference for lightweight trainers, this is a shoe I had to get on my feet now that I have whole set of trails a mile from my house. Even though I have several other trails shoes now, I keep reaching for this one. Let's talk about why.

Rabbit has been delivering some very comfortable and durable apparel for a while now. The EZ Tee SS (short sleeve) and LS (long sleeve) are no different and utilize their comfortable polyester and spandex hybrid material for a shirt that is comfortable for nearly any effort. As in the title though, this is for those easy day efforts, and for when you also want to look good doing your thing.

If you haven't heard of rabbit before, here are a couple things that define their company. They are a women-founded company that puts an emphasis on sustainable and ethical manufacturing. Based out of Santa Barbara, CA, they do all their manufacturing and product development within the state of California, keeping tabs on each step of production.

Saucony Kinvara 12 Multiple Tester Review

The original Kinvara was a major standout in the industry. A lightweight trainer with a lower drop that had enough cushion to train with but was light enough to race with. This was incredible for a high 7 ounce shoe at the time, given that most lightweight trainers still sat in the low 9 oz range. This shoe has evolved over time and edges slightly back and forth between more trainer and more racer. These were subtle shifts until this version. The Kinvara 12 takes a far faster and more aggressive turn than previous versions, but still has the essence of a shoe that can handle both training, racing and everything in between.

Saucony Guide 14 Review

The Saucony Guide 14 is a daily mileage stability trainer from Saucony that has been around and refined for a long time. The shoe features an updated upper to make the shoe more streamlined, feel lighter on foot and continues to utilize PWRUN cushioning as seen in the Kinvara and Ride models.

Saucony Hurricane 23 Multiple Tester Review
By Chief Editor Matt Klein and Senior Contributors David Salas and Nathan Brown

The Saucony Hurricane series is a long standing premium stability shoe. Generally featuring plush cushioning and a high level of stability, version 23 returns almost completely redone. The previous version suffered from an identify crisis (REVIEW), while the Hurricane 23 makes a clear statement. Featuring massive upper and outsole updates with traditional posting, the evolution of the ride of this shoe is quite dramatic and further emphasizes Saucony's performance focus.

On Cloudboom Review

The On Cloudboom is one of the more recent carbon plated distance racers to enter the market. With a high price point of $200 this shoe is meant to stack up against the highest of competitors. On has been making a lot of big moves as a company with acquiring athletes in 2020 and has made me deeply interested in their plans of competing at the next level. The Cloudboom is a nicely constructed racing shoe with the detailed review below.

Asics GEL-Nimbus Lite 2 Multiple Tester Review
By Chief Editor Matt Klein, Senior Contributors David Salas and Nathan Brown

Asics has been on fire with their development recently. Releasing both sustainable shoes as well as new and incredible performance updates, 2020 has been good. According to our recent interview with ASICS (shout out to Chad Mullevay, Asics Global Product Line Manager), 2021 is going to be even better. The Asics Gel-Nimbus Lite 2 is a great example of this. Updated completely with sustainable materials, men's and women's specific designs for stability and transition and awesome fit and rides. For those who love the Asics Cumulus or Nimbus series, this is an awesome option for faster days or a great all around lighter weight trainer.

361 TAROKO 2 REVIEW

The 361 Taroko 2 improves upon the original in almost every way in this new iteration. The Taroko was designed to be a trail hybrid shoe that was comfortable and versatile enough to run in most trail conditions, while still being comfortable enough to run road miles on as well. The original did a great job with this, but had some flaws. The new Taroko 2 looks to improve on those with a completely updated upper that holds the foot much better and also provides a heel lock mechanism for additional security.

Specifications (361 Degrees Running)
Weight: 10.9 ounces
Stack Height: not provided
Drop: 9mm
Classification: Trail Hybrid Running Shoe

Nike Air Zoom Structure 23 Multi-Tester Review

The Nike Structure series has appeared to be in limbo the last few years. The previous several versions were very clunky and so bad I wasn't willing to spend my own money on a pair. Rumors began circling regarding the Structure 23 being something different and it is. Version 23 of Nike's classic stability trainer only similarity to previous versions is the name. Gone is a post/wedge, gone is the weirdly fitting upper, gone is the incredibly harsh ride, gone is even the stability classification (by Nike). Instead we have something different. A stable shoe with some enlightened concepts of stability, a better ride and fit than previous, but still with some work needed.

Specifications (per Nike)
Weight: 10.2 oz (men's size 9)
Measured Weight: 10.9 oz (men's size 10)
Stack Height: 22 mm / 14mm
Drop: 8 mm
Classification: Stable Daily Trainer

Brooks Adrenaline GTS 21 Multi-Tester Review
By Chief Founder Matt Klein and Senior Contributor David Salas

The Brooks Adrenaline series has been aptly named the "Go To Shoe" (GTS). As one of the top selling shoes in running retail, it has remained a staple stability shoe. Over the last few years as the concept of stability has advanced, the Adrenaline series evolved with it, ditching posts in favor of GuideRails in 2018. While this may have been a shock to many long time Adrenaline wearers, the Adrenaline continues to be one of the (if not the best) best selling stability shoes. This take on stability has continue with continued improves of integration of these GuideRails but now we have a few extra additions on the Adrenaline GTS 21 that are worth checking out.

Brooks Adrenaline GTS 21 (per Brooks)

 Asics Gel-Kayano Lite Review

Asics has been making some big moves in 2020. Once known as the consistent company that did similar things for decades, Asics has exploded with massive updates and brand new shoes. Our review of the Metaracer was exciting (REVIEW) but honestly I (Matt) was most excited for the Kayano Lite. Influenced by and yet a massive departure from the ongoing Kayano series, the Kayano Lite was to be a lighter and completely different Kayano. It has lived up to all the expectations and this is a perfect example of modernized, lightweight stability that will work for a large variety of people.

Specifications (per Running Warehouse)
Weight: 9.9 oz (men's size 9), 8.9 oz (women's size 8)
Stack Height: 31 mm / 21 mm
Drop: 10 mm
Classification: Lightweight Moderate Stability Shoe

New Balance FuelCell Prism Multiple Tester Review

Since the debut of the midsole compound FuelCell, New Balance has been gaining a lot of traction in the footwear industry with innovation. Some popular shoes to note were the FuelCell Rebel, TC, and the newly released RC Elite. The foam keeps shoes lower profile while still giving a soft, bouncy, and responsive ride. The New Balance FuelCell Prism provides this, but now with a stability specific model!

Hoka One One Rocket X Multiple Tester Review

After watching Aliphine Tuliamuk win the 2020 US Olympic Trials Marathon on a brutal course in the Hoka Rocket X, interest has continued to rise on Hoka's true debut in the carbon fiber plated super shoe race. It is now officially coming to market with a larger release and is a true evolution and massive improvement on the prior Hoka Carbon Rocket. Featuring a carbon plate, a soft bouncy sole, a meta-rocker and a secure and snug upper, this is one distance racer you are going to want to check out if you like Hoka.

New Balance FuelCell Prism Initial Review

For a long time now, New Balance has been "doing its thing" via Fresh Foam and the variants of that foam. But then in the last 1-2 years we have the debut of their FuelCell technology, which has brought some really fun trainers, speed day shoes, and their elite racing flat. The Prism is the stability model that falls into the FuelCell line and gives an exciting light weight stability option that's already showing its versatility. Here are our initial impressions.

New Balance 860 v11 Initial Review

The Fresh Foam line contains some of the most reliable and staple shoes that New Balance has to offer. The 860 v11 is one of the first to contain Fresh Foam X, a softer and more responsive blend of the beloved Fresh Foam. The 860 is the stability shoe in this line that sports a nicely designed medial post and is built for durability and putting on lots of miles. Here are our initial impressions.

Skechers Gorun Razor Elite Multiple Tester Review

The Skechers GOrun Razor series has been a unique set of shoes. Light and fast enough for racing but with enough cushioning for training (for many), rumors started to emerge that a plated Razor was in the works. Your patience has been reward as yes, the Skechers GOrun Razor Elite is finally here. This shoe is a racing specific Razor that shaves off a full ounce of weight off while including an updated upper as well a carbon infused forefoot plate. The Razor Elite is light, fast, and very quick at toe off when pushed to racing paces.

Newton continues to create a unique running experience as the BOCO AT 5 features many components familiar to the Newton brand as well as some unique features specifically for the trail.  ASICS Gel Cumulus 22 Review

The ASICS Gel Cumulus line has been around for quite a while and is one of the staple shoes put out by ASICS. The Cumulus 22 is a wonderful update to the reliable everyday running shoe and consists of soft cushioning underneath, a soft and stretchy upper, and of course some GEL cushioning in the posterolateral heel. This update shaves off about an ounce of weight compared to the 21 and was designed with a "comfort-first" goal.

Skechers Razor 3 Cloak Hyper Review

The "Zee-Bruh" design is finally here! This color scheme was used on many Skechers Performance prototype shoes and instead of being subtle, was instantly recognized due to the extremely cool design. As a prototype colorway, it was never intended for production, but after a great deal of demand from the public (and some influence from Jamison Michael), it is here. The Skechers Razor 3 Cloak Hyper is an adaptation of the original Razor 3 with an updated Cloak upper and colorway along with a updated GOODYEAR full contact outsole.

361 Strata 4 Multiple Tester Review

David: Earlier this year 361 Degrees introduced their new foam QU!K Spring+, an EVA blend designed for more rebound and resilience to temperature changes. The shoe did well for me (David) in the Pacer ST and is now introduced to the Strata 4. This stability model is a daily training workhorse that has a softened ride from other 361 models, though still firm and protective for long mileage.

Skechers GOrun OG Hyper Review

The Skechers GOrun is technically on its 8th iteration as the 7+ (REVIEW). The original came during an interesting transitional time in the footwear world. It was a minimal trainer/racer with an anatomical but secure fit and a unique sole design to (supposedly) promote a different foot strike pattern. While we know a great deal more about footstrike patterns and what is/isn't important now, the original GOrun was the beginning of the fantastic line of Skechers Performance shoes you see today. In honor of the shoe that started it all, Skechers has redone it with a new Hyperburst midsole to bring a new twist on a classic shoe.

Skechers GOrun Razor + Hyper Review

Following the success of the GOrun Razor 3 Hyper, Skechers aims to improve on what it has already built with the Razor line. The Skechers GOrun Razor + delivers with new features including an entirely new upper and full length Goodyear rubber for an outsole. The shoe builds and expands on the beloved training companion for many with a shoe that is able to take it fast and slow day in and day out with a shift to a slightly more daily training favoring Razor.

Newton Distance S 9 Multiple Tester Review

The Distance and the Distance S are among the shoes I have always wanted to try, but never had or taken the opportunity. As someone who loves light stability shoes and racing shoes, I am a bit embarrassed that it took me this long to try the Distance S finally at version 9. A slowly narrowing category, this shoe is a unique one in regards to both stability as well as speed. I am excited the Distance S continues its legacy and think it is a great tool worth talking about!

Nike Air Zoom Alphafly NEXT% Review
By Contributor David Salas

The Nike Alpha Fly Next% is finally on the market after some debate on legality for competing. After the sub 2 hour marathon effort from Eliud Kipchoge in the original Alphafly footwear began to go under much more scrutiny. The remaining rules (to my knowledge): a limit of 40mm stack height and 1 plate. This shoe fits the bill and is the new racing shoe seen on the feet of athletes like Eliud Kipchoge, Galen Rupp, and Jakob Ingebrigtsen. Is it worth the hype? Let's take a look.

HOKA ONE ONE Clifton Edge Multiple Tester Review

The HOKA ONE ONE Clifton Edge brings a new line of training to the table. This shoe is marketed as a slightly lighter and faster uptempo Clifton. In some ways the the Clifton Edge accomplishes this, and misses the mark in others. Overall the shoe is an interesting concept for a road only shoe and worth at least giving it a stride at the local running store.

Skechers GOrun MaxRoad 4+ Multiple Tester Review

Editor's Note: Version 5 is out now! Find our review of the Skechers MaxRoad 5 here.

The Skechers GOrun MaxRoad 4+ is Skechers' unique take on a high milage/maximalist road shoe. This shoe is primarily an update to the MaxRoad 4 upper, which was critiqued for being too warm and not supportive enough. The great thing about Skechers Performance is that they truly listen to feedback from the running community (and reviewers like us). Therefore, the MaxRoad 4+ sports a more traditional feeling mono-mesh and polyester upper, which certainly changed the way this shoe felt during runs. Otherwise it keeps much of the same underneath, including a hunk of HYPERBURST with an aggressive rocker shape and a podular outsole. Let's dive in.

Asics Metaracer Multi-Tester Review

Asics often waits to jump onto new trends until they ready to put their own spin on it. The Metaracer is just that. The lightweight, carbon fiber plated racer is Asics answer to the direction many racing shoes are going in the current market. As with tradition though, they have stuck to what they know best: creating lightweight fast racing shoes that tend to be a little closer to the ground. The Metaracer features plenty of cushioning for a light racing shoe, features a unique upper designed for performance and a bottom loaded plate. A great racing shoe, but very different from the other max cushioned distance racers worth talking about.

Newton Kismet 6 Review

Many years ago, the first Newton review on this website was the original Newton Kismet. A light stability introduction model to the Newton line, the Kismet 6 continues on as a solid stability model. The spirit of the shoe remains, while some interesting upgrades follow the progression of the Fate 6 (REVIEW), the neutral sibling to the Kismet.

Mizuno Wave Sky Waveknit 4 Multiple Tester Review

The Wave Sky underwent a huge overhaul when it reached its third iteration last year with the loss of the infamous wave plate and introduction of XPOP foam. The Wave Sky 4 is another step forward, but carries much of what people grew to love in the Wave Sky 3. This shoe incorporates 3 midsole foams that work in concert with one another, including the first full length Mizuno ENERZY midsole. This shoe emphasizes comfort, cushion, and durability for lots of miles.

Adidas Adizero Adios Pro Review

Editors Note: Interested in the Adizero Adios Pro 2? Visit our review here.

While Adidas released their recent (there are previous ones from many years ago) carbon fiber shoe, the Adidas Adizero Pro (REVIEW), the release of their "Super Shoe" has been hotly anticipated. The small initial release came through a lottery system, which I failed to be selected for. Determined to get my hands on a pair as a gift to myself for finishing the first year of a full time PhD program, I managed to get one through StockX. After almost a month of waiting, they arrived. As a lover of the Adizero Pro, I was hoping this shoe would redeem the disappointment of the Adios 5 (REVIEW). For those wondering, the Adios Pro does not redeem the series as it is such a different shoe now. What you see is a uniquely plated training shoe companion to the Adizero Pro unless you are an elite athlete. The Adios Pro is a high stack height, super stable (almost feels like it belongs in a stability shoe category), but still adequately cushioned (unlike the Brooks Hyperion Elite) lightweight trainer/marathon racing shoe with a very unique plate(s) design.

Xtep 160X Knit Multi-Tester Review

Chinese companies have begun to release their own special foam/carbon fiber plated marathon racers. Prototypes of the neon yellow Li-Ning Feidian or "Boom" shoe was something I saw early on, but had difficulty finding a safe place to buy from. Then came another brand, Xtep, that I was previously unfamiliar with. At the end of 2019, they released a marathon racing shoe called the 160X. A mesh version was originally present, but I was unable to find my size (44). Finally, I found a pair of the new knit version, which seems to be following the trajectory of the Nike Vaporfly series. A month later with back and forth calls with customs, the Xtep 160X Knit finally arrived for me to run in. After some fast miles in these, here are my thoughts.

Atreyu Voyager Review

After a long wait the Atreyu brand brings their shoes to the market! With an interesting low cost minimalist approach to creating shoes Atreyu is attempting to shake up the running industry. This is the first ever subscription running shoe service (to my knowledge) where recurring purchases are $55, solo purchase $95. At only 6 ounces the shoe is very fun and feels light under feet when running. It goes back to the basics in a time when every other company is going more complex.

Reebok Floatride Energy Symmetros Multiple Tester Review

The Reebok Floatride Energy Symmetros continues a daily training line with the same foam in the beloved Reebok Floatride Energy 2.0. The Symmetros features a largely beveled heel with a mesh upper and in incredibly fluid ride throughout. We don't have specific stack measurements, but the Symmetros appears to have a higher stack than the FFE 2.0 for a little more protection and high durability while still keeping the weight down. (Update: we recently reached out to Reebok who provided us with their measured stack height, which is listed below).

Mizuno Wave Rider 24 Waveknit Multiple Tester Review

The Mizuno Wave Rider 24 WaveKnit is a continuation of the deeply successful daily trainer line with some pretty large improvements to the midsole, fit, and upper of the shoe. The new Mizuno Wave Rider 24 is the first trainer to feature their new foam compound Enerzy. The Enerzy foam is utilized as a heel wedge that extends into the front of the midfoot. For being a big change it improves the Wave Rider in every way and gives it a very fun ride while not sacrificing the workhorse aspect of it at all.

Mizuno Wave Rider 24 Mesh Multiple Tester Review

The Mizuno Wave Rider has been around for a long time, and this year the shoe receives a masterful update that could be considered an overhaul. This version of the Wave Rider sports new foam technology, modifications to the wave plate, and a new outsole design that will keep the "Wave Rider faithful" happy while also making the shoe more accessible for those who previously averse to the wave plate feel. Welcome to the new era of the Wave Rider, a continued contender for best workhorse trainer.

Hoka Rincon 2 Multiple Tester Review

As the Clifton has continued to gain weight, Hoka fans continually called for a lightweight maximalist Hoka (that wasn't a racing flat like the Carbon Rocket). Thus emerged the Hoka Rincon (REVIEW) last year: a lightweight but max cushioned shoe that could handle both long and fast miles. The shoe the Clifton tried but failed to be, version 2 returns as primarily an upper update. However, on foot it feels like a few other things have subtly changed. Others meanwhile have stayed the same.

Newton Fate 6 Multiple Tester Review

Unique for their Action/Reaction Technology utilizing lugs in the forefoot for energy return and and smooth transitions Newton brings the updated Newton Fate 6 to the table. This specific model is the Newton model they advise as the shoe to buy for those new to running in Newton footwear.

Saucony Triumph 18 Multiple Tester Review

While some companies have anxiously put their new foams into their racing shoes, few have applied the things learned in recent years to all parts of their running. Saucony is one of the few that has done this. With a brand new Endorphin Series (Endorphin Shift Review, Endorphin Speed Review, Endorphin Pro Review) for speedy days and a redesigned set of trainers (Ride 13 Review, Guide 13 Review, Hurricane 22 Review), Saucony has made a strong effort with new foams and designs to create a set of strong offers. The new Triumph 18 continues the trend with a super smooth redesigned upper and the bouncy PWRUN+ foam that makes the run far lighter than its listed weight. Another strong contender for trainer of the year, the Saucony Triumph 18 is an awesome update well worth checking out.

Skechers Hyper Slide Multiple Tester Review

From the makers of the highly raved hyperburst foam, Skechers creates a pair of recovery sandals featuring a full length hyperburst midsole. Featuring a high stack hyperburst midsole and a full length Goodyear outsole, the Skechers Hyper Slide is a durable recovery sandal that your feet will thank you for standing in post run.

Adidas Adizero Pro Multiple Tester Review

After a long period of waiting and secrecy, the Adidas Adizero Pro comes to the market. The shoe features a dual midsole of Boost and Lightstrike with a Carbitex carbon fiber plate to help with propulsion. With the intention of joining the "super shoe" group of marathon racers, the Adizero Pro gives a unique ride that can tackle 26.2 miles and even daily training for some.

Reebok Floatride Run Fast 2 Multi-Tester Review

The Reebok Floatride Run Fast original (REVIEW) was a fantastic shoe. Coming in a 6.6 ounces and featuring enough cushioning for daily training, workouts and racing (I actually used it for all three) it was one of the first fast shoes outside of the Vaporfly to feature a PEBA foam, yet was different in that it lasted forever. A truly unique, cushioned, fast shoe with an incredibly lightweight upper, I ran through several pairs before having to move on to review other shoes. Version 2 was released very quietly and we finally got on our hands on a pair (shout out to Run Republic in Walnut, CA!). While version 2 has some of the essence of version 1, it is a very different shoe. While still a decent shoe, fans of the first version need to be aware of the changes, so let's talk.

Specifications (per Reebok)
Weight: 7.7 oz (men's size 9), 6.2 oz (women's size 7)
Measured Weight: 8.3 oz (men's size 10)
Stack Height: Unknown
Drop: 8mm

Saucony Hurricane 22 Review

As the market continues to shift to different methods of stability, the maximum stability category of running shoes have begun to evolve. The Saucony Hurricane 22 is a great example of this, featuring a new soft midsole material, a less pronounced medial post and a new heel bevel. This shoe returns completely redone, providing a very different ride compared to any previous Hurricane models.

Nike Air Zoom Pegasus 37 Review

The original Nike Pegasus was released in 1983 and dubbed "the shoe for every runner." As one of the most recognizable running shoe names, the Pegasus 37 returns completely different. Although the soul of the shoe remains, the updates are a dramatic shift for such an iconic training shoe. The changes are mostly positive and certainly reflect the changes in the running market. Is it for "every runner"? Let's see....

ASICS TartherEdge Review

In the midst of the race to create the ultimate super shoe, companies are still putting out classic and effective racing flats that are getting overlooked. The TartherEdge is a great example. This shoe rocks a vintage looking upper with a mash-up of old and new tech that creates a snappy and light racing flat.

Saucony Guide 13 Review

The footwear industry is making changes when it comes to how stability is done. We are seeing less massive posts and more subtle methods of stability. While posting and wedging are still being done, the way they are being done is starting to evolve. The Saucony Guide 13. which finally loses the ISO name and returns to normal numbers, is one of the many examples where things are changing. With a less aggressive post that feels more mild than moderate stability, this shoe has evolved into something very different compared to the past.

Footwear Science: Running Shoe Fit

As a website and group of Doctors of Physical Therapy, we get a great deal of questions on running shoe fit. From individual footwear, to brands, to even switching between different gender of shoes. After so many questions, we figured we would finally put together a post on running shoe fit. This is an extremely complicated and highly individual specific topic. Most people will probably know about general size measurements. This post is about some general rules for fit and especially about the difference between men's and women's shoes and whether or not you can switch between them. The answer is yes you can in some cases. Let's start with the simple stuff first.

Editor's Note: There are always exceptions to the rules below. As always, the true answer is "It Depends." We are discussing primarily RUNNING SHOES in this post. Hiking, Cleats and dress shoes are not within our area of expertise.

Adidas Adizero RC 2 Review

The Adidas Adizero RC 2 provides a ton of quality for the price. The shoe is lighter than the renowned Adios racing line (7.1 ounces) with a 10mm drop and featuring the new foam LIGHTSTRIKE from Adidas. The RC 2 provides great ground feel with a snappy finish. It is not quite as plush as boost, but gives you nice push when the pace picks up. It will work well for those who like the ride to be a little more firm. In a world where racing flats easily pass $100, this shoe is definitely worth looking at for $85.

Mizuno Wave Peachtree 51st Rider Review

Although many races are up in the air at the moment, the Peachtree Road Race is a famous July 4th race in Atlanta, Georgia that has an extensive history. Mizuno traditionally has made special edition Wave Riders for this race and the last two years have featured updated Riders with brand new uppers. Although supposedly they feature same soles as the in line Riders with new uppers, both in 2019 and 2020 the shoes have felt different. Different in positive ways. We were fortunate enough to get a pair at the 2020 US Olympic Trials and after many miles, we figured we would share a review.
